Biography of Mohammad Haroon Chakhansuri, Acting Minister of Mines and Petroleum
Mohammad Haroon Chakhansuri (born in 1980) appointed as Acting Minister – Ministry of Mines and Petroleum, Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in June 2020. Mr. Chakhansuri has a Master of Public Administration degree from Sydney University, Australia.
In his 16 years of work experience across various government and non-governmental organizations including the Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development, Ministry of Agriculture, Ministry of Public Health, the World Bank Group, Administrative Office of the President, Office of the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and As Acting Minister [and Deputy Minister for Political Affairs] of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Mr. Chakhansuri’s areas of expertise and focus include governance, public policy, international development, strategic communication, negotiations and conflict resolution, systems development, performance management, monitoring and evaluation.
Mr. Chakhansuri started his career as Head of Information Coordination Unit in Ministry of Rural Rehabilitation and Development in 2003 (National Solidarity Program) and has worked there in various capacities until 2009, including project director and advisor to Deputy Minister. In 2009, Mr. Chakhansuri joined Ministry of Agriculture as Project Director and worked on donor funded projects until he left for Australia in 2011 to pursue his master’s degree. Upon his graduation and return to Afghanistan in 2013, Mr. Chakhansuri joined Ministry of Public Health as the Head of Coordination Unit for donor funded programs. Subsequently, he joined The World Bank Group as Rural Development Specialist, where he extensively worked on development projects.
In late 2015, Mr. Chakhansuri joined the Office of the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan as Special Assistant to the President. In the same year, he was promoted as the President’s Chief of Protocol. He also served as a Spokesperson to the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan before being appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff for Coordination of State Affairs. In 2017, he was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff and Spokesperson to the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and served for two years. In 2019, Mr. Chakhansuri was appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff - Governance and Programs at the Office of the President of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
He is married and father of four kids.
